Major Revamp for Charity Website

E-mail Print PDF

Over the past few months, 146WebDesign have been working hard on a major overhaul of the website of Coastal Charity CoastNet.

Their old site (build internally) was outdated and they found themselves with a site that kept falling over and wasn't performing as they wished.  After performing some emergency work on their old site, we proposed a move away from their Drupal system and to migrate over to Joomla as we believed it suited their level of technical knowledge better.

With training commencing next week, get ready to see an amazing before and after with the next fortnight (Feb 20th)

E-mail Print PDF

We are happy to announce the launch of a new site for a client that covers the area of Equity Marketing.

Equity Quest introduces world leading sales, marketing and operational executives to Private Equity firms seeking renewed growth and better operations in their portfolio companies. The site can be seen at www.equityquest.co.uk

There was a very short turnaround for this site and from the initial discussions, we actually got the site live (including a name change) within 2 weeks.

New online Darts store launched

146 Web Design, based in North Devon are pleased to announce the launch of another ecommerce store.

www.dartshopdirect.co.uk has been launched to allow the sale of all manner of darts products.

The site was built using Joomla integrated with the Virtuemart online store component. A few bespoke modifications were required to get the site running exactly how the owner wanted but here at 146WebDesign, that's what we're very, very good at.

How much does a website cost?

E-mail Print PDF

How much does a website cost?

The first answer is "Not as much as you think"

The second answer is that it's difficult to give a price as there are so many variables involved. It's like asking "How much does a car cost?". Now, is that a second hand Mini or a Ferrari with all the trimmings?

There are 2 cost areas involved in having a website. The first cost is the fixed price items. This includes the purchase of a domain name and the hosting (the web server that will physically hold your website so it's accessible to the outside world). As a guideline, I use one hosting company that charges £50 / year for the domain and hosting. So that's the ongoing cost of running a site. Very large sites may need more powerful web servers and so obviously the cost will increase

The second area is the actual creation of the site. This includes the scoping, design, coding, site architecture, testing, etc.

Now this is where all the variables come into play.

  • Is it a brochure site or full e-commerce?
  • Are there corporate guidelines to follow or will we have to create a design from scratch?
  • How much content will need to be included?
  • What functionality can be included 'off the peg' and what needs to be bespoke?
  • What integration work needs to be done?

Only once the initial scoping is performed can we give a fixed price for a site

As an example, we can create a site using a pre-built template (personalised to your branding) with full CMS for as little as £400

Vista black screen of death

E-mail Print PDF

Having trouble with Vista? Does starting your PC leave you with only a black screen and a visible cursor? After spending hours searching for a fix I finally combined a couple of fixes and have solved this particular problem. Hope this helps

  1. reboot your pc into Safemode
  2. Run msconfig
  3. Under the general tab, click SELECTIVE STARTUP and disable the first two items there.
  4. Click apply (you may need to recheck selective start up) and then Ok, you’ll be asked to reboot
  5. When it reboots, you should be able to get into your normal account but most of your services will be stopped (so no internet connection etc)
  6. Go to Control Panel > administrative tools, then to SERVICES
  7. You will notice a long list of your services. You must go on every item in that list where the startup type is set to Disabled and set it to automatic, (Right click, properties)
  8. Set every item to automatic (But dont start any of them yet aside from the ones that were already running)
  9. And this is the most important thing (DO NOT SET Windows Event Log & Windows Event Collector to automatic. Leave these disabled)

Restart your pc and it should work fine.

This is obviously not a fix for all vista problems so may not fix your problem. Sorry
