After spending a long, long time trying to update my ipod, it ended up wiped of all apps and music and I couldn't get it to restore. I kept getting errors 13 or 6 ("error 13" was the most common)
After trawling the net for answers and following advice such as "create a new profile in windows" or "hold down sleep for 5 seconds and do a little dance" and having no success I was at the end of my tether... Until....
I discovered that the cause of the problem is that the iPod has a conflict with all other USB devices plugged into your PC. I was running a USB WiFi router and as soon as I removed that, the ipod touch restored AND allowed me to upload photo's for the first time. I could upload music but there was always a sync error with movies or photos but as soon as I removed the other USB devices.. badaboom, it worked.
So in summary, remove usb devices, reboot your PC, attach your ipod and then update. Problem solved...
